Aviation Weather April 17, 2026

Good Friday Morning,

LFSB airport, Basel-Mulhouse will be heavily restricted until May 21st with the primary runway (15/33) closed. Runway 07/25 will be open with no straight-in instrument approaches. SUP 27-26 as more details. Also, LEST, Santiago, Spain will be closed from 04/23 until 05/27 for major runway works. Sup 21-26 has more information. We have also been informed that at LIML airport from 04/19 until 04/27 no parking will be available for wingspan greater than 24m unless you have been approved already. So if you have a trip planned to Europe this summer you might want to plan ahead and get parking/slots confirmed ASAP. After 5pm local this afternoon expect significant enroute delays and/or airport ground stops from Southern WI to OKC in association with severe thunderstorms.

Critical weather days/space Weather alerts – no critical weather days. G2 geomagnetic storms are forecast through Saturday.

CONUS severe weather outlook – today looks to be the most active for the next five days at least. Enhanced risk will exist from Southern WI to Northern OK. Widespread strong to severe thunderstorms likely with a risk for large hail and a few strong tornadoes with damaging wind gusts becoming the most prominent hazard by this evening.

Tropical weather outlook – as we enter normally a quiet period, we still have Typhoon Sinlaku, located 380 miles SE of Iwo TO continues to weaken and will be completely extratropical in 48 hours. No islands remain in its path.

Europe outlook – on Sunday a cold front will be located over portions of Central Europe while strong high pressure will be present over Ireland. A few showers are likely along the front from Western Poland to Switzerland. NOSIG storm systems are expected over the continent on Monday with strong high pressure remaining in place well to the North of Scotland with a broad Easterly flow over the North Sea into the UK and Ireland. Little change is expected on Tuesday with the 1040mb high located just North of Aberdeen, Scotland and a brisk Easterly flow anticipated over the UK and Ireland.

North Atlantic Jet stream – early next week will feature an unusual pattern with very light winds for the Westbound flights thanks to an upper level low North of the Azores and the upper level ridge over Iceland. This pattern will likely be present on Tuesday too.
