Aviation Weather April 8, 2026

Good Wednesday Morning,

As noted before, BGBW, in Southern Greenland will officially close on 04/15 at 1800UTC per the latest notam.  CYJT in Western Newfoundland remains closed until at least 05/12. Not sure if it will ever reopen. CYDF remains a good alternate airport in Western Newfoundland. LIML, has reduced fuel availability for the next few days at least per notam A1631/26. EGSS has runway closures on Sunday and Monday nights from 0015-0445z until 04/20. LFPB will be closed nightly from 2000-0400z from 04/13 until 04/17. Arrival restrictions continue at TNCM from 11z until 04z daily per notam A0198/26. Masters tournament volume will be very high today with expected delays. A teleconference will be held tomorrow at 1300UTC to discuss the Italian strike scheduled for April 10th from 1100UTC until 1500UTC.

Critical weather days/space Weather alerts – none through Friday.

CONUS severe weather outlook – marginal risks exist over portions of the Central Plains through Friday. The severe threat will ramp up over the weekend over the Southern and Central High Plains associated with low-amplitude shortwave.

Tropical weather outlook – severe tropical cyclone Maila, 750 miles Ne of Cairns, Australia will continue to slowly weaken over the next 24 to 36 hours due primarily to cold water upwelling. In the longer range the cyclone is expected to continue to weaken before approaching NE Australia early next week. TC Vaianu, 1100 miles North of Wellington, New Zealand, will likely continue to weaken over the next 24 hours as it encounters cooler water temperatures. Interestingly this cyclone will continue to move South fairly quickly over the next several days and will be a high impact non tropical low for much of the North Island of New Zealand beginning Saturday evening through Sunday night with very gusty winds and heavy rain and high seas. I would expect limited affects on the South Island as it will move quickly East of this portion of the country.

Europe outlook – on Friday, strong surface high will be centered over Northern France. Very deep area of low pressure, 350 miles NW of Shannon, and associated cold front will bring gusty winds and moderate rain showers to much of Ireland and Northern Ireland on Friday and Saturday. Cold front will pass through the remainder of the UK and France on Saturday with periods of light rain showers.

North Atlantic Jet stream – two upper level lows, one located to the SW of BIKF and another to the SW of Lisbon will allow for a general zonal flow to persist.
