Good Friday Morning,
Reminder that Chicago Midway airport (MDW) runway 13C/31C will become 13L/31R on June 12th. A deep upper-level trough this weekend over the NE USA and a strong ridge over MT will allow for a deep NW flow over the Western Great lakes and upper Midwest which will likely bring significant wildfire smoke to this region over the weekend. A high-altitude weather balloon is scheduled to launch today from central Norway and slowly drift to Southern Sweden from June 4th through June 14th. It will be at FL 650 well above normal aircraft flying altitudes. The G7 summit will be taking place in mid-June near Calgary, Alberta, Canada (CYYC). A special AIP supplement has been published for the period from 06z on the 14th of June until 06z on the 20th of June.
Critical weather days / geomagnetic storm outlook – no critical weather days are in effect through Sunday. Minor geomagnetic storms are forecast through Sunday.
Tropical cyclone outlook – TS Alvin, 450 miles SSE of the Southern tip of Baja CA continues to weaken rapidly this morning. Strong upper-level winds and cool sea surface temperatures will allow the system to become a remnant low by mid-day Saturday. No impacts to any land masses.
CONUS severe weather outlook – scattered severe storms are likely this afternoon from the Mid-Atlantic states to much of GA. A quieter period is expected on Saturday and Sunday.
Europe outlook – upper-level ridge will dominate from Southern Spain to Poland while a closed upper level low and moderately strong low-pressure area will be located midway between Scotland and Iceland. A cold front will extend from the low to Eastern Ireland and the Western UK with a few showers along the front. By Sunday the cold front will be over Northern Germany to NW Portugal. Widely scattered showers are possible along the front with only isolated weak thunderstorms. No severe weather is expected.
Canadian smoke model forecast – please see the latest based on the latest Environment Canada forecast smoke model. A change in the upper-level wind pattern will likely bring improving conditions by early next week to the CONUS.
