Bringing a Dog Into the US: Requirements, Waiver Information, and Guidance Documents
People aren’t the only ones with strict regulations to follow when flying… In fact, it seems as though our canine friends require far more paperwork per pound when compared to their human counterparts.
FPI has compiled several user-friendly, downloadable documents and instructions to follow and keep handy for the next adventure in which Fluffy will be on a flight entering the US.
The first details the requirements for bringing a dog into the U.S. The second gives instructions on applying for a provisional 90 day waiver to the Air Waybill (AWB) requirement. The next two documents provide information and guidance about extending the waiver to 9 months. Talks with CDC are ongoing to determine a long-term solution to the AWB requirement for private aircraft, but anyone bringing a dog in the near term needs a waiver.
The other two documents are produced by CDC. The first one, “CDC Technical Instructions for Waivers,” details the required information to extend a provisional waiver. The second, “CDC Process Map for GA,” has been modified from the original document produced for airlines. It offers a flow chart reference for what aircraft operators should be checking.
If there are any questions or issues on an actual arrival with a dog, the CDC is the responsible agency. The appropriate CDC Port Health Station should be contacted. A coverage map and contact list is available via the following link: Port Health Station Contact List | Port Health | CDC. When calling, you will enter a phone tree, and you should choose the option for “partner” which will connect you with a CDC representative.
FPI is always on hand to address any questions, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re unsure of the procedures involved with keeping your tail-wagging passengers up to compliance. No dog should ever get left behind!
