Aviation Weather October 1, 2026

Good Friday Morning!

It looks like CYJT, Stephenville, Newfoundland is now back open under new management. Per the notams, it is VFR only, and no metars/tafs are issued either. Runway 09/27 is closed however with one hour notification it is open. High volume at LAS this weekend due to the Nascar race and the NFL game. Significant delays at BOS will continue from 15z through 02z. A presidential TFR remains in effect today from 1600 local until 2100 local at BFM and MOB airports. Another presidential TFR will be in effect for DAY on Saturday from 1715 local until 2200 local. Finally, another presidential TFR will be in effect on Monday in Grand Island NE (GRI) from 1600 local until 2100 local. Dangerous heat expected through at least Thursday for portions of SOCAL including BUR/VNY with temperatures likely to exceed 100F. Could create issues departing BUR on the longer-range flights. Extreme heat warnings remain in place through 8pm Thursday. 850mb temperatures could exceed 25C.

No Critical weather days are in effect through the weekend. Space weather remains quiet through Sunday.

CONUS severe weather outlook – no significant severe weather outbreaks are expected through the middle of next week.

Tropical weather outlook – CAT 3 Hurricane Rachel, 250 miles South of Cabo San Lucas continues to move slowly West. It is likely to move to the West over the next several days and slowly weaken over time. TS Choi-Wan, 130 miles NNW of Tinian will likely intensify over the next 12 to 96 hours under fairly good upper atmospheric conditions. On Tuesday it will become a very large storm and current indications are that it should pass to the East of Japan then. Interestingly by the middle of next week it will remain a very deep cold core low pressure area with a very expansive wind field that could impact Alaska on Friday.

Europe outlook – most interesting feature on Sunday will be the presence of an upper-level low over Portugal and another broad and nearly stationary upper-level low over the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. An omega block will set up over Western Europe on Monday trapping these upper-level lows in place. Estofex continues to have a level 2 alert in place for Crete for excessive rainfall. Morning fog is becoming increasingly likely underneath the ridge over the UK late Sunday night into Monday morning.

North Atlantic jet stream outlook – at 18z Sunday, expect a zonal flow to continue, generally North of 53N with peak velocities of 125 knots.
