ETIAS, the Next Phase of eu-LISA, is Delayed

(November 2026)

While the European Union’s (EU) Entry/Exit System (EES) entered service over a year ago, the next phase, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), has been delayed.

Originally slated to begin in Q4 of 2026, ETIAS will not begin implementation until Q2 of 2027 at the earliest. No date has been set yet, as internal discussions are ongoing within the EU.

Once ETIAS is implemented, visa-exempt travelers to the EU (such as U.S. citizens) will require an electronic travel authorization before arriving in the EU. More information, along with the website for requesting authorization, will become available closer to implementation.

The EU has made it clear that the EES, and its future enhancements, are intended for any professional operator that brings travelers into the EU. After working closely with eu-LISA over the past four years, Flight Pro International (FPI)’s guidance is based on direct communication with them.

FPI will share updates regarding ETIAS as they become available. In the meantime, feel free to contact us with any questions you may have regarding the current EU EES.
