Starting October 1, 2026, applicable foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar will be required to hold valid Inbound Travel Insurance in accordance with the Insurance Regulations, 2026 – Government Notice No. 256. This requirement applies to entry through airports, seaports, and land borders.
For travelers visiting both Mainland Tanzania (NIC) and Zanzibar (ZIC), the applicable insurance depends on their first point of entry and the current implementation guidance. To view the entire presentation of Inbound Travel Insurance, click here.
What Travelers Need to Know
- Standard Adult Premium: USD 44 equivalent to TZS
- Infants aged 0-2: Free
- Children aged 3-17: 50% discount
- Groups of ten or more: Adults receive a 10% discount
- Coverage: Emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation, and loss of luggage
- Purchase: Online before travel or upon arrival
- Validity: Up to 92 days, including multiple entries
Who is Exempted?
- Tanzanian residents
- Holders of valid work or residential permits
- Tanzanian diaspora
- Diplomats
- Transit passengers
- Residents of EAC or SADC Partner States
- Travel crew not arriving/departing on a commercial aircraft
Please note that travel crew arriving on a private flight and departing on a commercial flight, or vice versa, will be required to obtain the Inbound Travel Insurance. Travelers falling within an exemption category should ensure that they carry the relevant supporting documentation when traveling.
Travelers needing to apply for Inbound Travel Insurance can do so online by visiting the Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance Portal. As implementation procedures may be updated or further clarified by the relevant authorities, travelers are advised to check the latest official guidance before departure.
What Should Travel Operators Do?
- Inform all applicable guests of this requirement before travel.
- Encourage guests to obtain required insurance online before departure.
- Advise guests to keep their insurance certificate readily accessible during their journey.
- Ensure guests understand that the require applies from October 1, 2026, and may be checked upon arrival.
