Aviation Weather June 24, 2026

Good Wednesday Morning!

Most interesting weather feature this morning besides the record-breaking heat over much of Western Europe will be the possibility of significant snow from Western WY to Western MT to the Southern Canadian Rockies in association with a very cold and unusual upper-level low moving very slowly through the area this weekend. Please check runway closure hours at MRLB until Sept 16th. PPR requirements continue at CYYZ with YHM a great alternative airport. PPR requirement also continues at YVR until July 8th and flight plans must be filed at least 4 hours before hand. Chicago Executive airport (PWK) will be closed on Saturday from 03am local until midnight local.

No critical weather days are in effect through Friday. No geomagnetic storms expected through Friday also.

CONUS severe weather outlook – today looks to be the most active for the next three with an enhanced risk later on today from the Denver area to Casper WY. On Thursday, not surprisingly a slight risk will exist from the TX panhandle to Western MO to the Casper WY area. On Friday, pretty much a mirror image in terms of aerial coverage however the risks are lower.

Tropical weather outlook – Cat 1 typhoon MEKKHALA, 325 miles SSW of Kadena AFB, will come very close to Kadena AFB at 18z tomorrow as a strong tropical storm.  t will be extra tropical as it moves very close to Tokyo on Saturday around 12z. This will not be a big impact storm for Tokyo. Two suspect areas in the Eastern Pacific pose no threats to any land masses.

Europe outlook – extreme heat continues through Friday over much of Western and Central Europe. Core of the upper-level ridge will be centered over Western Germany on Thursday and will move slowly East on Friday extending from Denmark to Southeastern France. Good news is that next week looks much more pleasant with more of a Westerly flow. I have included a few images of the temperature anomalies in degrees C for the next few days. With all this heat and humidity a few afternoon thunderstorms are possible with the highest likelihood on Thursday over the Alps and Portugal. On Friday, expect daytime activity once again over the Alps and also over Scotland and Ireland.

Long range tropical outlook – for the first two weeks of July expect increased activity along 10N from 120W to the Philippines. Atlantic looks to be quiet with plenty of Saharan dust present.

Smoke model forecast: look for increasing concentrations of wildfire smoke today through Friday over portions of CO/UT in association with fires in Southern Utah.
