EES Could Bring Delays to EU Travel
Flight Pro International (FPI) has done a lot of work to prepare for the new Entry/Exit System (EES) for the European Union (EU), which is planned to enter operation on November 10th, 2024, including certification of Flight Pro Connect (FPC) to connect directly to the eu-LISA system.
(For more details on the eu-LISA program, please see FPI’s recent webinar: “eu-LISA: Fact vs. Fiction” by clicking HERE.)
But one thing beyond FPI’s control is the change EES will bring to entry and exit processes for passengers. An important aspect of EES is replacing manual stamping of passports by recording entry and exit electronically. While this will almost certainly result in faster processing times in the long run, the initial implementation and transition could result in significant delays, particularly on arrival.
As part of EES implementation, all travelers to the EU must provide biometric data (facial image and fingerprints) which will be collected and stored in EES when they first arrive in the EU after EES is in effect. Once the biometric data is captured, future arrivals will utilize the existing fingerprints and photo for identity verification, which should take less time.
Equipment, facilities, and procedures are likely to vary from location to location. FPI is working with our vendors and representatives throughout Europe to keep abreast of the latest information, but travelers should be prepared for delays when planning travel to Europe.
