(May 2026)
With the busy summer season just around the corner, major London airports are once again introducing seasonal restrictions that will impact General Aviation (GA) movements, particularly during nighttime hours.
Careful planning will be essential for smooth operations into London, as availability tightens across key GA Airports.
Nighttime Options This Summer:
Southend (EGMC) – Best Guaranteed Availability
Located approximately 1h 40mins from central London, Southend remains the most reliable option for extended access.
- Open daily: 0600L – 0230L
- Limited flexibility beyond published hours (extensions possible but not guaranteed)
As the only London airport operating consistently past midnight, Southend will be a key alternative for late-night movements.
24/7 Alternatives Outside of London:
While not within London itself, the following airports offer the most dependable round-the-clock access. Prior notice is required to ensure sufficient staffing arrangements.
- Birmingham (EGBB)– ~2h 40min from London
- East Midlands (EGNX)– ~2h 40min from London
Luton (EGGW) – Limited Night Access Option:
Luton will remain highly restricted throughout the summer:
- Nighttime restrictions in effect 01 June – 30 September 2026
- Only 10 GA night slots per month (2300L – 0659L) with 6 night slots allocated to Signature and 4 night slots allocated to Harrods.
As a result, securing night slots will be extremely challenging. The airport is expected to operate normally until 01 June and potentially return to full availability after 30 September.
