During the most recent meeting of the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Security Council, Council members received a briefing from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that highlighted the increase in Global Positioning System (GPS)/Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference and the wide range of impacts to aircraft systems. The briefing also highlighted resources from the FAA available to flight crews.
Rick Snider, Flight Pro International’s (FPI) Director of Contracts and Compliance, is a member of the Security Council and came away from the meeting with a desire to help publicize the FAA’s resources.
Snider says, “The FAA publishes a great GNSS Interference Resource Guide that has a wealth of information. It provides background information, goes into the range of impacts to aircraft systems, offers guidance, and has links to many additional resources.”
Snider continues, “The FAA also has an easily accessible web form to report a GPS/GNSS anomaly. Submitting information via this form is immensely helpful as the data collected is analyzed to identify risks and help develop mitigation strategies. Reporting incidents in real-time to Air Traffic Control (ATC) is helpful, but submitting a report via the web form ensures that the right people at the FAA receive the information. It also provides more detailed information than they would likely receive from an ATC report. And, when the incident occurs outside of U.S. airspace, the information is unlikely ever to reach the FAA unless the web form is used.”
“This really is a help-them-help-you scenario.” Snider concludes, “The more quality data the FAA receives, the better able they are to develop useful mitigation strategies and provide guidance to operators.”
