Travel Tips to Mitigate London Road Closures During King Charles III’s May 2023 Coronation

We want to remind FPI clients traveling to the UK in early May that King Charles III’s coronation will take place on Saturday, 06 May 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London.

As we reported in March, many heads of state and royals from around the world are expected to attend. In addition, 01 May and 08 May are public holidays which are likely to add to the travel chaos. Many concerts, events, and celebrations are also planned for the festivities that weekend.

Clients visiting during the coronation weekend 5-8th May are advised to utilize hotels near airports due to road closures and security measures in place in central London.

FPI’s London-based partner Advectus Executive Chauffer, offers local inside knowledge to mitigate ground transportation concerns:

“At least one week before the coronation activities begin and spanning through two days beyond event dates, there will be extensive road closures and cordoned-off areas, security stops around Westminster and into the City, Tower Hill, and some parts of Central London and Mayfair.

Hotels such as St. Ermin’s Marriott County Hall, Tower Hill hotels, and hotels on the Embankment North and South of the river will have very limited access. For those wishing to use the Marriott chain, we recommend Regents Park, Maida Vale, Marble Arch, and Marriott Kensington as easier ‘in/out’ options.”

FPI’s London-based team member, Lukas Kendera, also advises:

“Travelers should book hotel rooms early, as the UK public and tourists from all over the world are likely to attend the festivities and hotels are expected to sell out.

Airports will also likely run out of parking. All of our usual GA-friendly airports in London (Luton, Farnborough, Stansted, Biggin Hill) ran out of parking for the Queen’s funeral last year, and we expect the same scenario to happen for King Charles’ coronation.

It’s best to advise any operators considering early-May London aviation operations to book early.”
