Weather Considerations for Operations to the World Economic Forum

(December 2025)

A primary operational concern during the World Economic Forum is the increased likelihood of IFR to low-IFR conditions driven by fog or freezing fog. This risk is especially prominent at LSMD (Dubendorf) / LSZH (Zurich) during the overnight and early morning hours throughout the winter season.

During this time of year, the combination of a low sun angle and a pronounced temperature inversion frequently supports fog formation in the valleys. When an upper-level ridge is present, atmospheric mixing is further reduced, significantly decreasing the chances that fog will dissipate in a timely manner.

These conditions were observed during last year’s event, resulting in multiple diversions to LFSB (Basel), where conditions remained well above IFR minimums.

To anticipate this pattern, we typically begin monitoring conditions five days prior to the event window. Our in-house Forecast on Demand product, supported by forecast Skew-T soundings, provides detailed three-dimensional atmospheric profiles that allow for early identification of stable, fog-prone weather setups.
