New Carbon Tax in Portugal
There is a new carbon tax on air travel departing from Portuguese airports, including airports in the Azores and Madeira. The tax applies to all departures of aircraft with 19 seats or less, whether commercial or non-commercial. This is an expansion of a carbon tax on airline passengers that had been in place since July 1, 2021.
According to an Official Notice from ANAC (the National Authority for Civil Aviation) in Portugal issued on June 28, 2023, this new tax is in effect beginning July 2023. The tax is calculated based on a formula provided in the Official Notice.
The unknown variables used to calculate the tax are (i) the maximum seating capacity of the aircraft type (not of the specific aircraft configuration) and (ii) the distance (in thousands of km) between the departure airport in Portugal and the destination.
The tax must be reported by the operator by the 15th of the month after the flight, and it must be paid by the 30th of the same month. Flight Pro International is working with our preferred handling company in Portugal, Omni Handling, to report and pay the tax for our clients.
